General Information

The 16th Annual Carlos J. Finlay, M.D. Symposium is
being held in recognition of Dr. Finlay and the
contributions to medicine and behavioral health made by
physicians of Latin heritage.
Carlos J. Finlay, M.D.

Dr. Carlos J. Finlay was a physician and epidemiologist
who discovered the mosquito as the vector transmitting
Yellow Fever to the human host. He was born on
December 3, 1833, Puerto Principe, Cuba to a father of
Scottish descent and a French mother. He later
graduated from Thomas Jefferson Medical College,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1855.

ln '1 881, at the Fifth lnternational Sanitary Symposium in
Washington, DC, he presented his theory of the
mosquito as the carrier of the disease. He published his
work in 1886, but his ideas were ignored for 20 years. ln
1902, a United States Army Commission, led by Major
Walter Reed, traveled to Cuba to do research on Yellow
Fever, and ultimately proved conclusively, that
mosquitoes carried Yellow Fever from person to person.
Dr. Finlay was the Chairman of the Cuban Commission
that worked very closely with Dr. Reed and the American
Team. The disease was eradicated in Cuba and
Panama. His birthday is celebrated on the American
Continent as the Day of Pan-American Medicine in his
honor.
