Dr. Casilda M. Balmaceda:

“An Exemplary Woman”

Dr. Casilda Balmaceda was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the marriage of Eudoro Balmaceda, Argentine, and Margarita Balmaceda, Puertorican. At the age of seven, along with her parents, she emigrated to Ponce, Puerto Rico, where she lived up to the age of seventeen. During her childhood formative years, there were certain events that gave nuances to the life of Dr. Balmaceda. Through the influence of her paternal grandfather, a well-known doctor in Buenos Aires, her mother teacher Margarita, her father Eudoro Balmaceda, a lawyer and architect, she developed the passion of caring for others, love for art, as well as the passion of travelling and the curiosity of learning about diverse cultures, and with her grandma, she learned to play the piano.

After finishing high school, she went to Tuffts University, in Massachusetts, to study Civil Engineering. In order to be able to pay her tuition, she worked at the library of the Department of Romance Languages, doing investigations and monitoring. Despite of not speaking French at that time, this job gave her the impulse to apply for a scholarship that she later achieved to study in Talloires, in the South of France. Once there, she decided to concrete her love “for the French,” settling in Paris for a year and a half. In Paris, she pursued courses of French and Civilization at the University of Sorbonne. After a year, because of an advertisement in the press, she worked four months in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, as a civil engineer on the skating rinks for the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo.

In 1982, she joined the School of Medicine at Columbia University-College of Physicians and Surgeons. While at the school of medicine, Dr. Balmaceda continued serving the community; she worked at Boricua College a teacher, organizing projects of prevention and asthma studies in the community of Washington Heights. After finishing the school of medicine, she moved forward to intern at the Montefiore Hospital, and then with a residency at the most wanted – Neurologic Institute of New York.

Afterwards, she went ahead for a specialty in Neuro-Oncology and Pain Management at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital Center in New York. Upon accomplishing this, she returned to the Neurologic Institute at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was a teacher from 1993 to 2010. While serving at the Neurologic Institute, the doctor wrote more than a hundred articles in professional magazines and books. She also wrote chapters about Neuro-Oncology in the classic book “Merrits Textbook of Neurology,” considered the classic book in the study of Neurology.

Dr. Balmaceda has done exhaustive clinical investigations, presented by herself around the world. Furthermore, Dr. Balmaceda launched the Clinic for Headaches and Facial Pain Treatment, assisting patients from all over the world. In 2010, Dr. Balmaceda realized that community work was her true passion, leaving behind the glory and the fame, to work more with those in need: the patients of our community.First annual medical symposium, December 7, 2019, Reading ,Pennsylvania   I Lead  Charter School,  Reading 19106
