Benzodiazepine taper protocol: A harm reduction interdisciplinary approach for benzodiazepine reduction Unfortunately, the prescriptions of benzodiazepines in the United States have increased by 320% during the past years. Moreover, the role of benzodiazepines in opioid overdose deaths nationwide has increased. In Philadelphia, the issue is even more significant, a recent report showed that approximately 90% of all opioid overdose deaths also involved benzodiazepines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, benzodiazepine prescriptions and unprescribed benzodiazepine use have been on the rise. A variety of efforts are focused on the opioid crisis; however, efforts to address the benzodiazepine crisis are needed. As a Community Behavioral Health (CBH) provider, it was imperative to develop an internal protocol to address the benzodiazepines crisis that is affecting our North Philadelphia community. The protocol consists of a harm reduction interdisciplinary approach, which includes patient and staff education, slow reduction of benzodiazepines, monthly monitoring of patients, and interdisciplinary meetings.. The goal of the protocol is to establish an appropriate reduction and discontinuation of chronically prescribed benzodiazepines in patients with mental health conditions that have put them at risk of developing dependency, overdose, and death.
