AHPSI: Here are the different license categories in the area of mental health in the state of Massachusetts:

• Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT): LMFTs provide counseling and therapy to individuals, couples, and families. They help people to cope with a variety of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and relationship problems.
• Mental Health Counselor (LMHC): LMHCs provide counseling and therapy to individuals, groups, and families. They help people to cope with a variety of mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
• Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC): CRCs help people with disabilities to live, work, and participate in their communities. They provide counseling, case management, and advocacy services.
• Educational Psychologist (EP): EPs assess and diagnose children and adolescents with learning and behavioral problems. They also provide counseling and therapy to help children and adolescents succeed in school and in life.
• Applied Behavior Analyst (BCBA): BCBAs use behavioral principles to help people with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. They develop treatment plans, provide therapy, and train caregivers.
• Assistant Applied Behavior Analyst (BAABA): BAABAs work under the supervision of a BCBA to provide therapy and support to people with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities.

Psychologist: Licensed psychologists have a doctoral degree in psychology and are trained to assess and treat various mental health conditions. They can engage in therapy, psychological testing, and research.

Psychiatrist: While not a licensing category, psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs) specializing in mental health. They can diagnose and treat mental illnesses, prescribe medication, and provide therapy.

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC): These counselors specialize in providing services to individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction.

• Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW): LICSWs are licensed to provide clinical social work services, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and emotional disorders.

The Board of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions (BMHHSP) is the state agency that licenses professionals in these categories. To be eligible for a license, applicants must meet certain education, experience, and examination requirements.

Licensed Rehabilitation Counselor (LRC): Rehabilitation counselors assist individuals with disabilities in overcoming barriers and achieving personal, social, and vocational goals.

Licensed Expressive Therapist: This category includes art therapists, dance/movement therapists, music therapists, and drama therapists who use creative arts therapies to support individuals’ mental and emotional well-being
