There are 3 different licenses that exist in the state of New York for the clinical laboratory area:
- Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT): This license is for individuals who perform complex and specialized laboratory tests to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. CLTs must have a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from an accredited program and pass the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Clinical Laboratory Scientist Examination.
- Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT): This license is for individuals who perform routine laboratory tests under the supervision of a CLT. CLTs must have an associate’s degree in clinical laboratory science from an accredited program and pass the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) Clinical Laboratory Technician Examination.
- Limited Permit for Clinical Laboratory Assistant (LCLA): This permit is for individuals who perform basic laboratory tests under the supervision of a CLT or CLT. LCLAs must have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass the NCA Clinical Laboratory Assistant Examination.
In addition to these licenses, there are also several restricted licenses that are available for individuals who are not qualified to obtain a full license. These restricted licenses are typically issued to individuals who are working in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of a licensed CLT or CLT.
