Extendiendo Gratitud: La Importancia de Nuestra Visita al Senador Pavel Payano»

Honorable Senator Payano,

It was a pleasure to host you and your staff at our office on Monday, November 20th, 2023 for a productive meeting with the Hispanic Association of Health Professionals, Inc. NY and the Dominican Medical College of Boston. We appreciate you taking the time to learn more about our proposals to improve health access and outcomes in your Essex district, particularly for Hispanic and immigrant populations.

In attendance from our organizations were notable leaders including Steven Gil, RN, Vice Chairman of the Lawrence Board of Health; Dr. Fidelina Castillo, Lawrence City Councilor for District A; and several outstanding graduates from local health education programs such as Luz Elena Cunha, Paulina De León, and Elly Jimenez.

We presented several initiatives aimed at better integrating foreign-trained health professionals into the workforce and connecting Hispanic residents with culturally and linguistically appropriate care. Specific ideas included mentorship programs between US-trained and foreign-trained providers, expanded interpretation services, community health worker initiatives in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods, and campaigns to increase health literacy around issues like preventative screenings and chronic disease management.

Our commission was thrilled to have an engaged dialogue on these proposals. We believe improved representation of Hispanic providers and targeted outreach initiatives will allow us to tangibly improve public health in Essex County. Your feedback and ideas were invaluable as we look to craft effective policies. We hope to maintain an open line of communication as we further develop solutions to our state’s health disparities.

The meeting was expertly coordinated by Dr. Aritmedes Restituyo, who skillfully guided the discourse through the core topics of our proposal. The four key proposals discussed were as follows:

  1. Accelerated Nursing Program for Medical Professionals Graduated Abroad: This initiative aims to streamline the integration of foreign medical professionals into the local healthcare system.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree Program for Dentists Graduated Abroad in Dental Hygienist: Recognizing the valuable skills of foreign-trained dentists, this proposal seeks to establish a program that maximizes their contributions as dental hygienists.
  3. Accelerated Mental Health Professional Program: Addressing the growing need for mental health services, this proposal outlines a program to fast-track the entry of qualified professionals into the mental health sector.
  4. Support for Establishing a New UASD Campus in Lawrence, Massachusetts: Advocating for the establishment of a new UASD (Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo) campus in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to enhance educational opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals.

The discussions were marked by a spirit of collaboration and commitment from all participants. Senator Pavel Payano expressed keen interest and support for our proposals, acknowledging the importance of these initiatives for the district. The engagement of Steven Gil, Dr. Fidelina Castillo, and the graduates from Phlebotomy Mobile further enriched the dialogue, providing valuable insights and perspectives.

In conclusion, we left the meeting with a profound sense of being well-received and with optimism for the positive impact these proposals can have on the healthcare landscape in the Essex district. We are grateful for Senator Pavel Payano’s time and attention to these critical matters.

Please do not hesitate to have your office reach out with any other questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Drr.Aritmedes restituyo.
