Summary: What Is CGFNS and Why Is It Now Called TruMerit?
CGFNS, formerly known as the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, has been the official organization responsible for evaluating the education, credentials, and licensure of internationally educated nurses for nearly 50 years. Its role has included academic credential evaluation, license validation, English proficiency verification, the VisaScreen® certification, and the CGFNS Qualifying Exam®.
In February 2025, the organization announced a major rebranding: CGFNS is now TruMerit™. This change reflects three key goals:
- Global Expansion: The organization now supports health workforce development worldwide, not only in the U.S.
- Brand Modernization: The name TruMerit conveys “genuine excellence” and represents the organization’s long-standing credibility.
- Clear Identity: The new name is simpler, more memorable, and better communicates trust and merit.
For internationally educated nurses, nothing about the process changes:
- All services continue as before.
- Existing CGFNS records remain valid.
- Requirements for the NCLEX-RN and credential evaluation stay the same.
- The new website for all processes is www.trumerit.org.
Nurses are advised to:
- Update all forms (such as Online Form 1) using the new name TruMerit.
- Double-check their information and status on the new website.
- Be aware that some documents may still reference “CGFNS” during the transition.
