
In Memoriam: Dr. Jose J. Contreras
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Jose J. Contreras on August 15, 2024. Dr. Contreras, a Dominican doctor and veteran of the Vietnam War, dedicated his life to the field of urology, with an extraordinary medical practice that spanned 65 years.
Dr. Contreras was a 1961 graduate of the University of Santo Domingo and furthered his education and training in the United States, where he became a distinguished urologist and a beloved professor at New York University and Columbia University College of Physicians. His career was marked by exemplary service as a Major and Colonel in the U.S. Army, where he served with distinction, earning numerous honors, including the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal.
Throughout his life, Dr. Contreras was not only a skilled physician but also a pillar of the Dominican and Hispanic communities in New York. His work as Director of the Community Urology Project at Columbia, along with his roles at prominent hospitals such as NYU and Cabrini Medical Center, exemplified his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.
The loss of Dr. Contreras is deeply felt by all who knew him. The Hispanic and Dominican medical communities, as well as the broader community, have lost a great professional, friend, and ally. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and excellence will continue to inspire future generations.
May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
